Why does website development need speed and security in 2026?

Most of your visitors arrive on a phone, using mobile data. In Cameroon, DataReportal counted 29.0 million mobile connections and 12.6 million internet users in late 2025 (Digital 2026: Cameroon). Every extra megabyte costs them money and patience, and the typical site is heavy: the median mobile home page weighed 2,559 KB in HTTP Archive’s July 2025 crawl (Web Almanac 2025).

Google measures that experience. Its Core Web Vitals rate a page as good when the main content appears within 2.5 seconds, interactions respond within 200 milliseconds and layout shift stays at 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of visits (web.dev).

Machines read your site too. Googlebot crawls only the first 2 MB of an HTML file, and a December 2024 analysis by Vercel found that the major AI crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity don’t run JavaScript. If your prices, services or FAQs only appear after scripts load, those crawlers see an empty page.

Security is the other half. Mobile data and mid-range phones. We design for a mid-range Android phone on a patchy 4G connection: compressed images, subset fonts, and no heavy sliders or video backgrounds.

Mobile Money first. Local customers expect to pay with MTN MoMo or Orange Money, while buyers in the diaspora usually pay by card. A store for Cameroon needs both, and we test real payments end to end before launch.

Two official languages. English and French versions get separate URLs and hreflang tags, and visitors choose their language. We never redirect them automatically by location, as Google’s multilingual guidance advises.
